Brain Injury Case Study

Jim, 24

Diagnosis: Brain Injury with other medical complications

Jim was only 24 years old when he fell two stories at work and sustained a severe brain injury.

In addition to his brain injury, Jim suffered multiple fractures and internal injuries as a result of his fall. After he woke up from his coma, his doctor referred him to Bethesda Hospital.

Jim had a private room on the Brain Injury Rehabilitation 14-bed unit. His wife was encouraged to bring family pictures and other items to stimulate his memory.

Jim had therapy twice a day, six days a week to restore his strength and endurance. Jim had to relearn how to walk, talk and dress himself.

Jim’s caregiving team developed a plan that focused on his memory skills, attention span, orientation and ability to follow directions. He participated in a community reintegration program that planned an outing to the State Fair.

Jim’s nurses focused on his strengths as a brain injury survivor. He improved his cognitive functioning skills while reducing emotional and behavioral difficulties.

With support services in place, Jim was able to return home to his wife after six weeks at Bethesda.
