Complex Medical Care Case StudyJohn, 59Diagnosis: Complications due to a leg fracture with diabetes.John didn’t know if he'd ever be able to care for himself again after the multiple leg fractures he suffered in a car accident. John also had diabetes and a large sacral wound developed, requiring isolation and complicating his hospital course. His physician recommended Bethesda Hospital to continue his need for IV antibiotics, dressing changes and ongoing rehabilitation. John’s care team created an individual plan for him that included physical, occupational, and recreational therapy. In occupational therapy, John worked on daily living skills such as dressing, bathing, administering his own medications and cooking for himself. John continued to increase his ability to participate in physical therapy each day. The therapy staff worked hard on therapies that would increase his strength and endurance. The staff was also able to assist with changing the special splints and casts John needed for his fractures. John’s physician, the enterostomal nurse therapist and nursing team managed John’s wounds through multiple dressing changes and antibiotic medications. During his hospitalization his diabetes stabilized. John was able to return home with home care after 20 days at Bethesda.
