About Parkinson's disease

Parkinson's disease is a movement disorder cause by the decreased production of dopamine, the chemical in the brain that controls movement. Often, the first symptom noticed is tremor. Other symptoms may include softening of the voice, difficulty swallowing, poor balance, shuffling of steps, and the general slowing of movements.

At this time there is no cure for Parkinson's, but medications can help to lessen symptoms and slow the progression of the disease. Proper nutrition, regular exercise and staying engaged in life are also recommended in treatment plans. Get tips for living with Parkinson's.

A diagnosis of Parkinson's can be frightening, especially since there is still much misunderstanding about the disease.

Education about Parkinson's disease is one of the best tools patients and families of patients have in treatment.
